the daily grind

hello amanda, carla, and meisa,

sorry i havent written you guys in a long time. I am sitting here on my fourth call night, and just missing you all like crazy. its really quiet around here right now, my beeper has only gone off once and its 8pm (very weird) and im in the work room typing away all by myself. it just took me a long time to settle in and now maybe i will be able to write/talk more often... though i get more tired and feel more in the groove everyday.

so right now i am on orange team=endocrine (hormones), renal (kidney), and pulmonary (lungs) (thats for you amanda, though you prolly know the lingo as well as we do now). I have the cutest kids, the best attendings, amazing nurses, and brilliant collegues. The teach so much here, formally and informally, every single day--i realize that some folks come from schools where they are used to that and really ahead... hopefully i will catch up--this is a lot more interactive teaching than i am used to. But i am all over managing patients--clinically, i feel totally up to par. But we don't walk round much, and i really really really miss that. I got my renal attending to do it, by asking her to show me an exam on a post transplant kid. In the past two weeks, two kids have gotten kidneys and come to our floor. its been really exciting to see these families. its just weird, i kinda miss knowing the names of the doctors and what they did. i miss being on a small team. its weird to round three times with three different specialties, and see all the attendings every day. im sure i'll get used to it. and strangely enough, maybe because my calls havent been really busy, i love my calls. i feel like its a great time to chill out, read, eat, catch up on emails and blogs... and i like making decisions about patients and being called to the bedside to evaluate them. I still get really nervous to order crazy meds, and a little tachycardic when im called on a POD2 renal transplant kid with high blood pressures. luckily my seniors are really cool and don't care if i call them about any kind of orders. the seniors are so freaking smart, i can't ever imagine getting to where they are at. My classmates are pretty cool. very nice, diverse, outgoing, and going out alot. I will soon join in now that i have gotten my first paycheck (alot smaller than i thought.)

Max is doing well; he hasn't grown too much more from when you last saw him. and still as cute as ever. i tried to buy him those baby gates to block in my kitchen, but he learned to climb them and get out, so a big ass crate it shall be. i love coming home to him. he has formed an unbreakable bond with pine cones... he insists on bringing them in everyday from his walk. The weather has been beautiful here, 80's, breezy, and sunny EVERY SINGLE DAY. i get to drive home with my sunroom open and windows down. i think it has rained once. Sometimes the nights even get chilly! low 70s! there are tons of outdoor concerts from everything from cleveland orchestra to local bands. and art and wine and everyother kind of festival. there are also lots of parks. jon and i went bike riding along a path the other weekend. its been reallllly pretty! i havent had a chance to explore the food here much, cause i was waiting for mula, but i will keep you posted. i have eaten every meal but two either at home or at the hospital (thank god for free lunch and ridiculous amounts of on call food money).

Things with jon are going okay. i think we both just miss home and family and friends and knowing where things are--like a post office. and being around friendly drivers. and people that understand his accent. he got a job welding for a fabrication company (i think they make lots of things out of lots of different kinds of metal). They call him tex (jon said he prefers your nickname, carla). he seems to like it okay. i think it has been to easy to come here and not make an effort to go out or get to know lots of people because he is here and max is here and its so easy and comfy to go home, but i think im ready to delve... i will keep u updated.

i don't know what else to say, i miss you guys a lots.

love,
rupa
